Maitreya Project, Uttah Pradesh
The AROS team won an international design competition to design a world-class pilgrimage destination to add to the existing and historical Buddhist pilgrimage circuit within Northeast India. The project consists of a landscaped park housing a cathedral, monastery, convent, guesthouse, library and food halls, with a 150m high inhabited Maitreya Buddha statue as the centerpiece. The project is to be a universal symbol of peace and love, and has been designed to cater for visitors from any religious, social or geographical origin. The primary structure and envelope of the statue has a design life of 1000 years. AROS are retained as lead architect providing design services and long term strategic advice.
The project has been documented and programmes aired by the BBC, Discovery Channel and National Geographic, together with news, and industry publications.
Research and design work for the project has formed the basis of PHD's and specialist papers.
